Chapter Fourteen

Brendon’s nerves were shot because sitting beside Emily while that little prick flirted with her all night had him on edge. The only reason his wolf hadn’t already gutted the little fuck was because he could sense that Emily had no interest in the man. Tina had been trying all night to keep the peace by distracting him from the little shit, not that it was working. Mason’s constant flirting wasn’t as annoying as the she wolves who kept subtly insulting Emily.

He’d never noticed how annoying Jenny and Brandy were until he’d been forced to sit here and listen to them drone on about various things while they peppered sly remarks about how Emily wasn’t good at this or that. He knew that their insults were in response to his mark on her. She wolves could get real bitchy when they thought someone wasn’t good enough for their alpha, not that he cared what they thought. Rodrick had been encouraging Mason to flirt with Emily and smiling like a damned fool when Brendon’s claws shot out shredding the napkin he’d placed in his lap.

To say he was ready to leave when the meal was finally wrapping up was an understatement. As he stood cupping Emily’s elbow to help her up he leaned in whispering, “We’re leaving. No staying to chat tonight. We need to talk.”

Emily didn’t speak, she just turned to look up at him. Her eyes were clouded with confusion, but he was pleased when she nodded. Relief crashed through him as he smiled at her mother.

“Tina, this meal was divine. Emily has an early day so we need to leave, please forgive us.” Brendon excused both of them and cupping her elbow with every intention of leaving, he wasn’t pleased when Brandy spoke delaying them.

“Oh, surely you can stay for coffee, right Emily.” Brandy said. No, they fucking couldn’t, Brendon wanted to shout, but he held his tongue as Emily spoke.

“Actually, I really do need to get home.” Emily said, making Brendon’s wolf grunt because she wasn’t going anywhere near her house tonight. She’d be in his bed because he’d had enough of sleeping without his mate. He couldn’t handle letting her go again, especially after he’d watched another male flirt with her all night while fielding snide insults trying not to kill anyone.

“Of course, dear. It was so nice for the two of you to attend. I’ll see you out” Tina said, shoeing them towards the door of the living room following them to the door. Brendon felt his wolf relax as soon as they exited the living room, but as they neared the door he realized they weren’t getting out the door without talking to her mother.

“I am sorry about Mason, alpha. I didn’t realize that you two were—together. Jeffery hadn’t told me until I asked after smelling—um well till after you arrived.” Tina looked slightly embarrassed.

“Mom, it’s not what you think. We’re not dating or anything—,” Emily started saying, but he interrupted her before
